Chiropractic Adjustments and Manipulation
A chiropractic adjustment, also known as chiropractic manipulation, manual manipulation, or spinal manipulation, is the primary chiropractic treatment method for back pain.
Spinal manipulation relieves pressure on joints, reduces inflammation, and improves nerve function. It has been a trusted form of treatment since the ancient Greek Hippocrates documented manipulative techniques in his writings back in 1500 B.C. Today, spinal manipulation is used to treat conditions such as low back pain, allergies, menstrual cramps and headaches.
How Does Spinal Manipulation Work?
When vertebrae shift out of place, there is an overall systemic response from the muscular system to the central nervous system. Without proper alignment and flow, our nerves, immune system, and minds cannot function at their highest peak.
Spinal adjustments and manipulations are an excellent way to keep the body functioning at its highest level without any discomfort. When the body is adequately aligned, it becomes able to respond and perform as it was built to do.

The study* also shows a significant improvement in the overall wellbeing of the test patients. Many other studies confirm the effectiveness of chiropractic care over acupuncture and medication.
Three phases of Chiropractic Care
This concept applies to your body as well. If something is not right with your body’s foundation, then that needs to be addressed before true health can be achieved. Chiropractic care addresses many common reasons why people experience pain and other health issues. With chiropractic care, your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care:
Phase 1: Initial Acute Care (pain/symptom management)
Because most patients start initially with intensive care, they will make visits more frequently in order to feel better. During this phase chiropractic adjustments may be combined with other procedures to help relieve symptoms. Depending on age, condition, lifestyle and other factors, repeated visits over weeks or months may be necessary to treat the problem and reduce the symptoms.
Phase 2: Rehabilitative/Corrective Care (improved function/spinal changes)
With reduced pain, the Rehabilitative Phase is for more complete healing to occur. Underlying muscle and soft tissue damage can remain, even after you feel better. At this stage, the frequency of visits is often reduced. You may be urged to supplement your care with exercises, dietary changes, or other self-care procedures. Discontinuing care without complete healing will set the stage for a relapse.
Phase 3: Wellness/Prevention Care (non-symptomatic/preventative care measures)
After the recovery of your original problem, regular chiropractic wellness “check-ups” can preserve your progress. Periodic visits can catch problems before they become major concerns. Wellness-minded adults and their children choose this type of care to look and feel their best.
Chiropractic is for everyone
Everybody has the potential for a healthy life and a functioning body. The prerequisite for this is to have a trouble-free nervous system through chiropractic care and the resulting certainty the body can function “In a healthy manner
Only if the optimal supply of every organ, every muscle and every cell in the body is guaranteed and excessive stress is avoided, will the body have the opportunity for better well-being and the elimination and prevention of possible complaints, which can also make you sick in the long term.
Chiropractic care for Geriatric
As the population ages, older adults turn to geriatric chiropractic care to enhance their physical and mental health, and overall well-being. One reason for the increased popularity of such services is that when people get older (65 years plus), their bodies start to develop more spinal problems which leads to problems with their joints, ligaments, nerves, bones, and discs.
While these problems are not specific to seniors, they are more common for older adults who gradually see a decline in mobility. This decline in mobility impacts their movement with decreased flexibility, poorer balance, and impaired posture. All of which reduce their quality of life and independence.
To maintain their quality of life, many seniors turn to geriatric chiropractic care because it offers a natural and non-invasive approach that enhances their health and well-being. Chiropractic care focuses on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, helping patients realign their musculoskeletal structure, particularly the spine, and allowing the body to heal without surgery or medication.
Benefits of chiropractic care for Geriatric patients include:
- Reduced risk of falls
- Alleviating chronic Pain
- Improved movement
- Better balance and coordination
- Enhanced health and well being
The American Chiropractic Center Erlangen uses a diverse range of techniques when treating older adults. Some main techniques we use include:
- Joint mobilization: This involves utilizing gentle, hands-on joint mobilization techniques that enhance joint mobility, reduce stiffness, alleviate pain, and improve functional movement.
- Soft tissue therapy: Techniques like myofascial release and massage are applied to target muscle tension, stiffness, and soft tissue restrictions. These techniques promote relaxation, boost blood circulation, and relieve discomfort.
- Exercise and rehabilitation: Geriatric chiropractors create personalized exercise programs to improve strength, balance, and flexibility. These tailored plans also improve mobility and reduce the risk of falls while maintaining overall physical function.
- Posture correction: Chiropractors utilize various approaches, such as ergonomic education, spinal adjustments, and specific exercises, to improve postural imbalances, mobility, balance, and spinal health.
- Fall prevention: Chiropractors offer balance training and guidance on home modifications so older adults can maintain independence while living in a safe home environment.
- Pain management: Techniques like spinal adjustments and therapeutic modalities (e.g., heat or cold therapy) are used to manage pain associated with age-related musculoskeletal conditions.
Chiropractic for Children and Adolescents
Chiropractic has been regarded for centuries as a vital aspect of a healthy life. Chiropractic care is a safe, drug-free, non-invasive treatment for a variety of illnesses and injuries. It involves the manual manipulation of the spine and joints to keep the musculoskeletal system aligned properly and functioning optimally. It is a great service to provide any child, for so many reasons.
- To keep their musculoskeletal system aligned properly and functioning optimally.
- Provide a natural and alternative treatment for a medical condition, injury or wellness care.
- Aid with the reduction of stress which has been directly linked to the functionality of the immune system. Chiropractic has proven benefits in combating illness by boosting immunity and reducing stress.
- Help children with special needs, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), increase their ability to focus and maintain better self-control in school.
- Help children fall asleep easily, sleep soundly and enjoy feelings of alertness all day long.
If your child is complaining of aches, pains, soreness, strains, headaches, or suffers from posture problems, a chiropractic adjustment may be just the thing to help alleviate symptoms, correct a problem and provide preventative care.
The best way to ensure there are no obstructions to your child achieving optimal health and well-being is to bring them in for a check-up. Spinal care for children can be compared to regular dental check-ups. You bring your kids to the dentist on a regular basis to detect any problems with their teeth before they become big issues. The same philosophy can be applied to the wellness of a child’s body.
The chiropractic philosophy is that the nervous system controls all the functions in the body — a fact published in “Grey’s Anatomy.” If you remove any interference to the nervous system with specific, gentle adjustments, then the body has the ability to self-heal and self-regulate. If your child suffers from chronic ear aches, sleep problems, or behavior issues, their body is telling you something is out of balance and not working properly. You have the choice of either medicating that symptom or finding out what is causing the problem.
More and more parents are seeing first-hand the benefits of chiropractic care for their children and the entire family.
